NC REPUBLICAN CHAIRMAN STEPS DOWN | News
 NC REPUBLICANS CHAIRMAN LINDA DAVES
AP - RALEIGH, N.C. Three years will be all for North Carolina's Republican Party chairwoman who brushed off John McCain's criticism and continued to attack President-elect Barack Obama and his former pastor in a television ad during last year's election.
Linda Daves said Tuesday she will not seek re-election to the post, stepping aside at the end of her term in June, when the party convention will choose a new leader.
"I think it is good and healthy for an organization to have fresh, new leadership periodically," Daves said in a statement.
Some candidates had already surfaced before Daves' announcement. Marcus Kindley, a former Guilford County GOP chairman who lost to Daves for the state post in 2007, announced in the fall he would seek the job again this year.
And outgoing state Sen. Fred Smith, R-Johnston, who finished second in the 2008 GOP gubernatorial primary to Pat McCrory, is mulling a bid.
Daves took over as party chairwoman in 2006, after Ferrell Blount stepped down. She was elected to the position in 2007, vowing to aggressively target Democrats.
The soft-spoken former school teacher did just that.
She drew scorn from McCain in April, when the state party aired an ad showing the fiery remarks of Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Daves defended the ad, and refused the GOP presidential candidate's call to pull it.
The 30-second advertisement showed a clip of Wright proclaiming from the pulpit "God damn America" for the country's history of racism and treatment of minorities. The ad's narrator said Obama is too extreme for North Carolina.
Closer to the election, the party began circulating a mailer highlighting Obama's ties to 1960s radical William Ayers. It contained several photos of Ayers, including his mug shot.
"This is the story of William Ayers ... Terrorist. Radical. Friend of Obama," the ad said. It also told voters that Obama is "not who you think he is."
Republicans in North Carolina struggled in November's election, losing a Senate and House seat. Obama was also the first Democratic presidential candidate to win the state in more than three decades.
"I am proud of what Republicans have been able to accomplish together for the people of North Carolina over the last two years," Daves said. "The fruit of the labor associated with party building takes time to grow."
